Write 3 short essays on representation of women in media each essay cannot exceed 300 words, based on:
1. Discuss the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Why is it considered a feminist show? How does Buffy embody the feminist hero? In your answer, discuss specific themes and examples that
indicate a feminist stance within the show. In your answer, make specific references to the articles read on Buffy for class, and to the lecture on Buffy.
2. Discuss the concept of enlightened sexism as discussed in Susan Douglas’ book. What is enlightened sexism and how is it represented in our society and the media? Is enlightened sexism
problematic for women and how they are represented in the media? Why or why not? Give specific examples from exactly one TV show in your answer (not using Buffy), analyzing how the show portrays
female characters and the impression they give of women in the real world. Even if you disagree with Douglas, you should use a TV show that represents her view well. Once you choose a show that
represents her view, you must argue persuasively either that she is right based on that show or she is wrong in spite of that show.
3. Discuss the idea of violence as discussed in the assigned readings on Buffy. Can violence be used to achieve just and feminist aims? If so, how? If not, why not? Construct an argument for
how violence would be used by an autonomous Slayer to dismantle patriarchy or corruption in the Buffyverse.
