Give a brief introduction to organisational culture, what it is, why it is important and evaluate its centrality to
organisational performance.
How can culture be analysed and measured?
What approaches can be used to change cultural norms and behaviours?
What needs to be considered in doing this effectively?
Use examples from your organisation/ experience/ the literature to support your points. Explain and evaluate how
the cultural change was implemented. For example:
You could
• examine current organisation culture within your firm using the Cultural Web (Johnson and Scholes, 1999).
• discuss and examine culture changes taking place within own organisation and why the change was
necessary e.g. to align culture with organisation strategy, crisis, dysfunctional culture etc.
• discuss ethics and changes in organisational values e.g. were the changes necessary because of ethical or
legal problems?
• Design and develop a justified, costed implementation plan for either changing the culture or overcoming
resistance (which recognises practical and contextual factors).
