Professor comment : The most common problems I saw were students not having a clear hypothesis, not citing evidence from the primary sources/overreliance on secondary sources, providing a big pile of evidence with no explanation as to why it is important or why it supports their argument, excessive quoting and not using their own words to make their argument, issues with grammar mainly about sentence structure, and the use of an unprofessional tone. This is an academic paper, not a mystery novel—tell the reader right from the start what your argument is. What will you argue and what evidence will you bring forth to support your claims? Everything you say must be supported with evidence from the primary sources, and every piece of evidence you bring in needs an explanation as to why it supports your argument.
